![]() ![]() That is, the awaken spell "awaken a tree or animal to humanlike sentience," and humanlike sentience apparently includes a rolled Intelligence score of 3d6, making even 3 a high enough Intelligence score… according to the spell awaken, anyway. If the goal is to uplift to humanlike sentience a magical beast that possesses an Intelligence score of 1 or 2 sooner than with a 9th-level spell, the easiest way is to plop on its noggin a headband of intellect +2 ( Dungeon Master's Guide 258) (4,000 gp 0 lbs.). (In fact, a DM could probably reduce its spell level by 1–3 and not have the spell break anything, but I've not tried that.) …But there's a less expensive albeit more fragile way to grant a magical beast a higher Intelligence score ![]() I suspect that many DMs who would allow the spell awaken magical beast into their campaigns would simply have it align with the 3.5 revision of the 5th-level Drd spell awaken ( Player's Handbook 202) but keep its higher spell level and XP cost. The spell dates to before the 3.5 revision but was never updated therefore it's game-legal yet subject to minor adjustments by the DM (see Dungeon Master's Guide 4). The spell costs the caster 500 XP, twice the XP cost of the awaken spell. Like an awakened animal, the magical beast gains 3d6 Intelligence, +1d3 Charisma, and +2 hit dice" (links added). The 9th-level Drd spell awaken magical beast ( Dragon #304 38) is like " awaken, but awaken a magical beast with an Intelligence score of no higher than 3. As far as I know, however, none of them target magical beasts.Ī magical beast can be awakened using Dragon magazine material… There are other awaken spells that apply to other types of creatures, like awaken construct ( Spell Compendium) and awaken ooze ( Dragon vol. As you say, it would not necessarily apply to other magical beasts, like the Tarrasque.Īwaken on creatures that are not animals or trees I would probably allow a druid to cast awaken on a hippogrif, but not because of shenanigans to establish the Animal type-it would just be a one-off exception to the usual targeting rules for awaken. ![]() Or, for that matter, just stack up on Intelligence penalties to get there “naturally” and just accept having poor Intelligence until you can manage to get awakened, and then enjoy the bonus Charisma and HD. The skull talisman or glyph seal won’t work (activating either interrupts spellcasting), but there are other ways to get the Animal type.Īnd even restricting it to animal-like Intelligence is problematic, because druids can take Intelligence damage, drain, or penalty to get there if necessary, and then get cured afterwards. This is a big problem, because awaken can provide enormous, permanent stat bonuses. That’s because this is directly adjacent to a pretty big abuse: if they can get the Animal type, there is no rule that prevents druids from casting awaken on themselves. The last thing I want is for them to hunt down a tarrasque, feed it some potions, spend 250 XP, and have an intelligent colossal killing machine as a friend.Ĭomplexity, I think, is far less of a concern than precedent. But, I want to be careful about allowing this.
